A great late spring or early summer hike that begins near Salt Lake City, Utah up Big Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Mountain Range.
This hike was an awesome reminder that we were in the Rocky Mountains with amazing rocks and boulders jutting into the scenery. The views into the Valley and the peaks across Big Cottonwood Canyon were stunning, as well. The first mile was under tall pines that completely protected the forest floor--it was very beautiful.
This is a great early summer hike with south-facing slopes getting early snow melt. I was kind of hoping to find Mt Raymond on this hike but was vague on the details of how to access it. I later learned that we had traversed right below it to get to the top of Porters Fork overlooking Millcreek Canyon.
Getting there: The trailhead is on the north side of the road on the upper loop of the S-turn 4 1/2 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon. We hiked Mill B North then cut left onto the Desolation Trail heading northwest, and ended at the top of Porter Fork. Roundtrip was 7 1/2 miles. John Veranth's book "Hiking the Wasatch" is an excellent guide for this hike.
