Little Black Mountain 5/9/09

The green hills were stunning this time of year on this hike above the Avenues of Salt Lake City, along the Wasatch Mountain Range.

The views of the valley and lush green are there right from the beginning of the hike: Though the trees don't have leaves yet, this is the time of year do to this hike...when the hills are covered with green grass and the well-worn trail (first mile or so of the hike) has spring run off keeping it muddy to keep the bikers away:

The hike is as steep as this photo makes it appear (and as green!):
About a mile into the hike you'll reach the top of the first hills and be able to look down the other side into City Creek Canyon:
The hike continues to climb with more of the valley coming into view:
Looking ahead, the peak to the right is the final destination:
This last ascent will last longer than you expect, and is very steep. As you climb this time of year, the green disappears to frozen ground and some snow:
At the top you have almost a 360 degree view, this one is looking Northwest at the Great Salt Lake:
Facing Southwest overlooking the Wasatch range on the left and the Salt Lake Valley:
And looking South over Parley's Canyon and the Wasatch Mountains:
Getting there: I approached from Perrys Hollow Drive at 1250 East and 640 North. Early on you'll pass some other connecting trails, just continue uphill. When you reach the top of the ridge, go right. You'll hike along the ridge the rest of the way, passing the Twin Peaks on your right before cutting further north towards Little Black Mountain. This hike was 8.5 miles roundtrip:
